Thoughts on economics and liberty

OK, burning brides is not a Hindu custom alone. Muslims are pretty good at it, as well.

Many people commented on the previous blog post on this issue – (but on Facebook).

Here are key comments on Facebook:

My comment

IN MY QUICK ESTIMATE HINDUS ARE LIKELY TO BE AROUND 10,000 TIMES MORE BARBARIC AGAINST WOMEN THAN MUSLIMS. On average it would appear that Hinduism burns to death more than 10,000 times the women than Muslims stone to death. But because these are not reported in the international press, Hindus in India are complacent and are happy to point fingers at Muslims.

Ram Lal Verma I think, you are bias…

Sanjeev Sabhlok Ultimate result is the same: burn or stone to death. What's the bias?

Ram Lal Verma Bias in terms of comparative numbers (10,000 times). You must also compare the freedom of living of women in Hindu and Muslim incorporating living conditions of women in Majority of Muslim countries…

Ram Lal Verma You must differentiate stone to death is their part of system (Sharia Law) while throwing acid on women due to the anger is not in Hindu tradition…such cases happened due to instantaneous reaction for taking revenge etc…Such cases have no umbrella of religion as you are trying bias analysis…

Sanjeev Sabhlok This is NOT about acid attacks. It is about Hindu brides being burnt: one per hour. "freedom of women in Hinduism". Kindly illustrate, given the MASSIVE prevalence of rape, acid attacks, and burning of women.

Vinay Thakur I only read about dowry related deaths like this (by burning)…and this was not restricted to any particular religion as far as I know…I hope this is not an attempt to get some cheap publicity by dragging name of religion in this issue of domestic violence which is prevalent all over the world….

Ram Lal Verma I agreed with Vinay…such crimes are not a part of any religion but a society as a whole (Hindu and Muslim both)

Sanjeev Sabhlok Vinay, dowry deaths are almost entirely restricted to Hindus, being driven by son-preference in Hinduism, and consequent structures of birth (girl children are aborted) and marriage which severely lower the status of women in Hinduism.

Vinay Thakur I have seen same status for women everywhere doesnt matter which religion…and dowry is social custom not a religious one…yes in India as Hinduism is major religion you can see more cases from that religion but that's just because of ratio…the issue is social not a religious one

Sanjeev Sabhlok Will be good to know how many Muslims or Christian brides are burnt every year in India. Burning brides (or newly married women) is, as far as I'm aware of, a PURELY HINDU custom – driven by the massive son-preference found in Hinduism.

OK, since some people are objecting to my view that burning brides is predominantly a Hindu issue, I've dug up the following data

"Hindus (103) comprised the single largest category followed by Muslims and then Sikhs. No female having died within seven years of marriage belonged to the Christianity religion." [Study reported here]

Table No. 3 Religion wise incidence

S. No.

Number of cases

Note, this data comprises all kinds of deaths within seven years of marriage. I'm not sure this study draws a clear distinction between DOWRY related deaths and suicides/accidents.

However, this data is perhaps more conclusive:

"At over 2000 dowry-related deaths per year, and annual rates exceeding 2.45 deaths per 100,000 women from dowry-related violence, Pakistan has the highest reported number of dowry death rates per 100,000 women in the world." [Source]

I'm willing to accept that BOTH MUSLIMS AND HINDUS BURN BRIDES. It is not just a Hindu issue as I had earlier thought it to be.

However, that doesn't make it less barbaric, nor the Hindus/Muslims any less barbaric.

Note that this is NOT a world-wide phenomenon as many commentators seem to think.

I'm informed that in Islam, the husband gives meher (money) to his wife. Clearly, it is not working in South Asia.

In which Hindu religious text it is written that Hindus should burn and beat women. Problem is there because evil mentality that has developed because of Idiots like Tulsidas.

But in Islam, in Koran Allah instructs Muslim men to beat his wives.(wives not wife).
    शुद्र ढोल पशु नारी सभी ताडन के अधिकारी ……Hindu should either own this idiot fully or reject it fully.

Such barbarism in Hinduism was introduced during Muslim period may be an Influence of Islam. Tulsi himself wrote all his writing in a mosque may impacted by Islam.

    BUT in Vedas: यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता:
    यात्रास्तु न पूज्यन्ते स्र्वस्त्रफाला: क्रिया

Actually burning of brides has nothing directly to do with son-preference this attitude is mainly responsible for problem of female infanticide, bride burning is all because of greed and social evil called ‘dowry’…and I think you misinterpreted or didn’t read my comment properly I didn’t say this crime *I won’t call it a custom, it’s a crime) is world wide phenomenon but domestic violence is and I consider this as a part of it…and if you read about issue of domestic violence you will realize that it is world wide and prevalent in people from all religions and cultures just like issue of sexual harassment or abuse.

I agree at least in part with you. Indian women had a high status during Vedic times. However, something happened after that. I suspect Manusmriti is the root of the mistreatment of women. See this:

    1. “Swabhav ev narinam …..” – 2/213. It is the nature of women to seduce men in this world; for that reason the wise are never unguarded in the company of females.

    2. “Avidvam samlam………..” – 2/214. Women, true to their class character, are capable of leading astray men in this world, not only a fool but even a learned and wise man. Both become slaves of desire.

    17. “Balya va………………….” – 5/150. A female child, young woman or old woman is not supposed to work independently even at her place of residence.

    18. “Balye pitorvashay…….” – 5/151. Girls are supposed to be in the custody of their father when they are children, women must be under the custody of their husband when married and under the custody of her son as widows. In no circumstances is she allowed to assert herself independently.

    19. “Asheela kamvrto………” – 5/157. Men may be lacking virtue, be sexual perverts, immoral and devoid of any good qualities, and yet women must constantly worship and serve their husbands.

    20. “Na ast strinam………..” – 5/158. Women have no divine right to perform any religious ritual, nor make vows or observe a fast. Her only duty is to obey and please her husband and she will for that reason alone be exalted in heaven.

    21. “Kamam to………………” – 5/160. At her pleasure [after the death of her husband], let her emaciate her body by living only on pure flowers, roots of vegetables and fruits. She must not even mention the name of any other men after her husband has died.

    26. “Bhartaram…………….” – 8/370. In case a women, proud of the greatness of her excellence or her relatives, violates her duty towards her husband, the King shall arrange to have her thrown before dogs at a public place.

    27. “Pita rakhshati……….” – 9/3. Since women are not capable of living independently, she is to be kept under the custody of her father as child, under her husband as a woman and under her son as widow.

    28. “Imam hi sarw………..” – 9/6. It is the duty of all husbands to exert total control over their wives. Even physically weak husbands must strive to control their wives.

    33. “Na asti strinam………” – 9/18. While performing namkarm and jatkarm, Vedic mantras are not to be recited by women, because women are lacking in strength and knowledge of Vedic texts. Women are impure and represent falsehood.

    37. “Ati kramay……………” – 9/77. Any women who disobey orders of her lethargic, alcoholic and diseased husband shall be deserted for three months and be deprived of her ornaments.

I think a law should be passed to demarcate which religious text constitute hinduism and which dont
